Defibrillators at PK KUT
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a highly specialized, reliable, computerized device that uses voice prompts to guide the person providing first aid through the procedure of safely defibrillating a victim with cardiac arrest. An AED can be used by anyone who witnesses an event requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (70% of cardiac arrest cases in adults result from myocardial infarction). The simple operation of an AED means that even persons outside medical personnel can use it to save lives. The defibrillator combines digital signal transmission technology and advanced ECG analysis algorithms, so it first performs an analysis of the heart’s function and then—if necessary—generates a so-called defibrillation impulse that saves lives. This ensures that applying an electric shock to an unconscious person is the correct action. An electrical impulse with an energy of approximately 250J, passing between electrodes attached to the victim’s body, is intended to stimulate the heart muscle to resume function. Statistics show that cardiopulmonary resuscitation combined with defibrillation within 3–5 minutes of loss of consciousness can allow for successful resuscitation in 49–75% of cases, and each minute of delay in defibrillation reduces the probability of survival by 10–12%.
Operating the device is simple enough that basic knowledge can be acquired by reviewing the graphical user instructions or watching a demonstration video. Additionally, PK KUT employees undergo defibrillator operation training during initial occupational health and safety training in the section devoted to the principles of providing first aid.
