The main campus of PK Krakow University of Technology, located in the very heart of Kraków, at 24 Warszawska Street, near the Main PKP Railway Station. It is the largest campus of our university, housing six of the eight faculties, central administration, the library, and other units.
The buildings forming the campus were constructed during Austrian rule as military barracks named after Archduke Rudolf and constituted the largest complex of its kind in Kraków. After Poland regained independence in 1918, the complex’s function was preserved – Polish troops were stationed here, and the barracks were named after King Jan III Sobieski. In 1947, the Military District Command transferred the buildings to our university under a rent-free lease for a period of 5 years. Since 1956, they have been the property of PK Krakow University of Technology.
Coming back to 1947: the Military District Command initially transferred the buildings to us under a rent-free lease for a period of 5 years, with the possibility of extension for another 15. The university fully took the possession in 1956. Naturally, extensive renovation and adaptation works were necessary in the acquired facilities, which were carried out quickly, also thanks to the involvement of staff and students.
